U.S. Cavalry soldiers identified the need for a pistol that could be operated with one hand while on horseback. Designed by Major George Schofield, this break-open pistol proved to be ideal. Shooters could easily eject all six spent cartridges with one hand and reload again while on horseback. Top-break Schofields were also carried by more notorious characters, including Jesse James and Wild Bill Hickok. A version of the Schofield eventually became a favored firearm in the Russian military as well.
This modern-day reproduction features a blue frame and barrel, case-hardened hammer and trigger guard and walnut grips. The forged frame is designed to handle modern ammunition loads.
